MONDAY, DECEMBER 26

FOURTH NIGHT OF HANUKKAH

"I can't figure out any sort of rhyme or reason to her inventory." I sat down on a stool and shook handfuls of necklaces at Brady. "It makes no sense."

Mom had kept some things in boxes, taken other stuff out and laid it willy-nilly on the shelves. It wasn't organized by type of merchandise and it wasn't organized by country of origin. I had Guatemalan necklaces next to Ghanan skin cream. The only thing she'd separated out was a box labeled "Fair Trade."

"If it helps, I'm making some progress on the financials," Brady said from the desk. "She used one wholesaler for all her products, so that makes it pretty easy to figure things out on that end."

He gave me a rueful smile. "If you want, I can tackle the income tomorrow. And I have Wednesday off."

I went to him, looking over his shoulder at the laptop. It only made the vaguest of sense to me, but it was mostly green positive numbers, and only one red negative number.

"This stuff makes sense to you?" I set the necklaces on the desk and rested my hands on his shoulders. I couldn't be this close without touching him.

"Yeah, it's just QuickBooks. We use a version of it at Prost."

I had a vague recollection that math had been his best subject in school. Whereas I'd always squeaked by in math and done extra credit for my social studies classes.

"You're hired," I joked.

He looked at me over his shoulder. "So you're keeping this place open?"

His expression was serious enough, I took a step back. "I have no idea." It was still so overwhelming, I got a little panicked when I thought about it. "I was just joking. I mean, you've got the bar."

Something in his expression went flat. "Yeah. The bar."

I picked up the necklaces and went back to the shelves. Even if I was going to sell the inventory and close the shop, I'd have to make some sense of the merchandise. I couldn't leave this random mess. So I started clearing a shelf. That could be the jewelry section. It made more sense to organize by type than by country or region. "I thought you liked working with Steve."

"Steve's a good guy and a good boss."

I glanced over to see him scrub his hand over his face. He looked…tired. Not because we'd been having a lot of sex and getting not quite enough sleep. He looked the deeper sort of tired, like life was wearing him down.

I longed to go to him, wrap him in a hug and tell him he didn't need to look so weary at twenty-three. But something held me back. So I turned back to the shelf, concentrating more than I needed to on laying each necklace out just right.

I heard Brady stand and come toward me. "He's thinking of opening a new bar down in Chicago. Wants me to take over Prost."

"That's great!" He was close enough, I could reach out and squeeze his arm.
